Birch class

Welcome to Birch Class.

Our class teacher is Mrs Gristwood and we are very lucky to be supported by Mrs Hassam, Mrs Ali, Mrs Patel and Mrs Gelou!

In Numeracy we will be learning about how to tell the time and how to pay with money looking at why we need money and how we use it. Our focus is still on number and we are aiming to be able to count in 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's forwards and backwards. Year 2's are also learning these as multiplications. We will be covering mass and measurement using the signs '>' and '<' to compare and order and will be describing the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

A big thank you to all parents who are supporting their children with their counting in 2's, 5's and 10's as this is really helping them with their learning in class.

In English we are learning about 'The Farm Shop' linking this to the following units:

1. Riddles

2. Stories with familiar settings

3. Persuasion texts

We will be writing our own riddles and persuasion texts about foods and farms. The story we are reading is 'Mudpuddle Farm: Alien Invasion' by Michael Murpurgo. We will be writing our own interesting stories using this story to plan our own.

We are still working hard to write a 'high 5 sentence' and are thinking of different ways to make our writing exciting including:

- conjunctions (and, but, so, if, because)

- expanded noun phrases (ways to describe a noun)

- adjectives (describing words)

- contractions (I'm, don't)

- suffixes (ful, ness, ly, ed, er, est)

We are also focussing on our reading and comprehension, making sure that we are understanding what we are reading through answering a range of different questions.

'Never Eat Shredded Wheat’ is a thematic unit based around where food comes from, with a key focus on geography. It begins by looking at compass directions and locational language, before moving on to learning about continents and oceans.

We really enjoyed making and tasting our soup!

We have been busy using our senses to decide which vegetables and fruits we want to include in our soup recipes. Some of us tasted them too!

Horus birds of prey came in and taught us about how owls live. We were all brave enough to hold one too!

We celebrated Chinese New Year, creating our own dragon dance, making and giving lucky red envelopes and learning about the year that we were born.

We have done some fabulous artwork with Mr Hugh Templeton when he came into school last week! Mrs Gristwood is so proud of the work we produced that she put it up on display for everyone to see!
