    Welcome to Sycamore Class 2026-27

We are delighted to welcome you to Sycamore Class for the 2026-2027 academic year. Mrs Rehman is the class teachers, supported by Miss Canovi and Mrs Ahmed

We look forward to sharing our learning journey with you throughout the year, celebrating the children's achievements, and giving you a glimpse into the exciting activities, memorable experiences, and special events that make Sycamore Class such a wonderful place to learn and grow.

Thank you for visiting our page. We hope you enjoy following our adventures and successes throughout the year!

    English

In English, we are studying the unit ‘Stories with Familiar Settings’ and have been exploring the wonderful story ‘The Pirates Next Door’ by Jonny Dudley. Through our learning, we have already discovered so much about The Pirates Next Door and developed our writing skills by exploring a range of literary techniques. We have learnt how to use exciting adjectives, powerful verbs, expanded noun phrases, conjunctions and repetition to make our writing more interesting.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the story and exploring the characters, setting and exciting events. We have thought carefully about how the author creates excitement, humour and suspense. We are now looking forward to using all of our learning to plan, draft and write our own imaginative pirate stories, applying the skills we have developed throughout the unit.

    Mathematics – Place Value

In Maths, we begin the year by focusing on Place Value. The children will develop their understanding of numbers to 100, learning to read, write, compare and order numbers with increasing confidence. They will explore the value of tens and ones, represent numbers in different ways using practical resources and pictures, and use their knowledge of place value to solve reasoning and problem-solving challenges.

Throughout the unit, children will also practise counting forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, as well as finding 1 more and 1 less and 10 more and 10 less than a given number. They will begin to recognise patterns in numbers and develop their understanding of comparing numbers using the symbols greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=).

By building strong place value knowledge, children will establish the foundations needed for the rest of their mathematical learning throughout Year 2.

    Reading

We encourage all children to read with an adult at least three times each week. Reading is a vital skill, and regular practice at home helps children to develop their fluency, comprehension, confidence, and reading stamina.

To earn their Reading Badges, children must read a minimum of three times per week and have their Reading Record signed by an adult. Children may keep the same book for more than one week if they have not yet finished it. Once a book has been completed, it can be brought into school to be exchanged for a new one.

    P.E Days

Our P.E. days are Monday and Thursday.

Children should come to school dressed in their full P.E. kit on these days. They may wear their school jumper or cardigan over their kit if needed. Please ensure that children also have a pair of suitable trainers for P.E. lessons.

    Homework

Homework will be set on Century Tech on Fridays and should be completed by Tuesday.

We encourage all children to take pride in completing their homework to a high standard, as it provides valuable opportunities to reinforce learning and develop independence. Please support the children and encourage them where possible to complete this independently.

    Any Questions?

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send a message via ClassDojo, and I will respond as soon as possible. Alternatively, you are welcome to speak to me at the end of the school day.

Thank you for your continued support. Working together helps to ensure the very best outcomes for every child in Sycamore Class.
